Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) stated that it has, along with other institutions launched Massive Open Online Courses in agriculture sector (Ag MOOCs). The members with IIT-Kanpur are Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIMC) and the University of Agricultural Sciences Raichur (UASR), IITK said in a press release.
The conglomerate is supported by NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning),
project of the Human Resources Development Ministry. Also, NPTEL is among the largest publishers of open educational resources in the world, it said. The consortium will offer MOOCs mainly targeting professionals in agriculture, including students in state agricultural universities and institutions ,teachers serving there and specialists or any interested and aspiring learners. Reportedly, the first course of the Ag MOOCs consortium will be launched on March 17, 2015.
According to IITK, "The Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are enabling thousands of aspiring learners to avail a course required in a single offering. The scale is a major advantage in MOOCs and shows clear signs of acceptance. They can be developed fast by institutions which own advanced expertise in their field."
